Tourmaline is a magnificient gem, members of the Tourmaline family of minerals have the same basic crystal structure, but occur in many colours.

Rubellite, from the Latin for red, is the name given to the pink or red variety,the most expensive tourmalines are the blue indicolite, green verdelite and pink rubellite.

The name Tourmaline comes from the Sinhalese (Sri Lanka) word tura mali which means: the stone of mixed colors.

Tourmaline is the official birthstone for October and the gem for the 8th wedding anniversary.

Tourmaline is available in a wide variety of colors from black to bluish-black, dark brown, yellow, medium brown, blue to neon blue, lime to dark forest green, red and reddish purple, yellow, pink, and colorless.

Tourmalines are 7 to 7.5 on the Mohs' scale of hardness.

This gem is believed to strengthen the body and spirit, in special the nervous system, blood, and lymphs. It is also thought to inspire creativity and was used extensively as a tailsman by artists and writers.
